How to End a Bluegrass Song with Style

In this guitar lesson, you’ll learn a fun bluegrass guitar lick in G that you can use at the end of a guitar solo or at the end of an entire song. I use this guitar lick all the time when I’m jamming with friends. It’s a pretty simple lick, and it sounds best over a key of G chord progression that ends with: D – – – D – – – G – – – G – – – (there are a ton of bluegrass songs that end with two bars of D followed by two bars of G).

Nobody’s Darlin’ but Mine

In this guitar lesson, we’ll work on a guitar solo that follows the melody of “Nobody’s Darlin’ but Mine” written by Jimmie Davis. In this lesson, we’ll focus on the version of this song as it was recorded by Merle Haggard. This guitar solo is a really good example of how to play classic country lead guitar over a song’s chord progression. After you learn the guitar solo arrangement, practice your country strumming over the chord progression using a |Pick-D-DU|Pick-D-DU| strumming pattern. When you’re playing the strumming pattern, make sure your alternating bass line picks are loud and clean while your “Down-DownUp” strums are soft and smooth.

Cold Frosty Morning

In this guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play the traditional bluegrass tune called “Cold Frosty Morning”. This song dates back to the 1700s and it has become a favorite tune played at bluegrass jams. It’s a great song to use for working on your bluegrass flatpicking — practice picking the melody at a slow pace in the beginning and increase your speed in increments. Also, don’t worry about volume at first. Try to pick each note with a nice, clean, and soft pick stroke. This will help you build the right technique and the speed and volume will develop over time. “Cold Frosty Morning” guitar tablature is available for download below the lesson video.
