Country Hybrid Picking with an Alternating Bass Line

Lesson 2 – Hybrid Picking Rhythm Course
Lesson ID: A0122

In this lesson, we’re going to add more to the country hybrid picking pattern that we studied in the previous lesson of this series. We’ll get comfortable alternating the bass line with our pick which will get you ready to learn some of the more difficult hybrid picking patterns that we’ll be covering later in this course. After you learn the pattern, try practicing it over the chord progressions of your favorite country songs.

Devin love the cross picking lessons – hope it is ok to use the thumb instead of a pick – keep em coming.

Another cool lesson. How important are the fingernails in getting a good tone? I’m just picking with the ends of my fingers.

I used to play classical guitar Devin, adding fingers with the pick I feel not comfortable…I persevere because it is so beautiful to play like this…

If you only used your pick but played the same notes, would that be called cross picking?

Devin, in lesson 1 you presented two different patterns the second one you used for when you sing. Should we concentrate on the singing one more as you used it today. I won’t use the first pattern to practise as alternating base is used so much more as it sounds better.
Thanks for today.

I was working on the Molly Tuttle style lesson. Went to YouTube started watching Townes Van Zandt videos and the documentary BE HERE TO LOVE ME. Progressed into Guy Clark songs. So, hours later, I’m on Ultimate Guitar looking up all these songs, playing along as I’m able. All of a sudden I hear myself playing a riff or a walk up or a fill here and there. WTF was that??!!?? Shocked myself!!! Whoot whoot!!

Hi Devin, just getting started, working on Lesson 3. The problem I am having is that after I pluck with the ring finger, somehow I am touching it with my finger as i move to the next note causing it to stop ringing. Any tips on how to handle that? perhaps focus on bending up the ring finger after plucking the target string

Any tips on balancing the volume between the pick and the fingers? I’m used to playing with my thumb, pointer, and middle fingers so I’ve never had to worry about it before. Thanks Devin! Loving the lessons.

I found this lesson very confusing because of the reference to the pattern used in the previous lesson. I thought in the previous lesson the pattern was similar to the DDU-UDU, which has two fingers in sequence. The description of the previous lesson given in this lesson has a pick stroke between any two finger plucks.
