“Walk On Boy” in the Style of Doc Watson

Lesson ID: A0192

In this guitar lesson, we’ll work through a progression from the classic song “Walk On Boy.” The original version of this song was written by Mel Tillis and Wayne Walker. The flatpicking arrangement that you’ll learn in this lesson is similar to “Walk On Boy” as it was performed by Doc Watson. After we work on the main flatpicking guitar break, we’ll take a closer look at this song’s rhythm guitar part including the chord progression and vocals.

Think I’ll give this one a go. I like Am tunes and could do with a follow up after Jerusalem Ridge.

BTW, I love the dark subtle burst on that guitar Devin. What model is it?

Great lesson! Hey Devin, Doc ends the song with a groovy 5 dollar chord. Any chance you can shed light?

I notice that I tend to avoid the songs with any pick/strum/strum/ action so I’ve decided (since my epiphany that I’m improving as a player) that my goal is to just ‘bow my neck and go” on these arrangements that I’ve been skipping! Also, I’m moving up the neck more. I do notice I avoid chorded songs. I’m blaming weak fingers on that. Game plan!

Your comment when you posted this a month ago was “have the main flatpicking guitar break lesson posted for this song… still wrapping up the lesson video for the rhythm guitar part and should have that part posted early next week.” When do you think you will get to the rhythm part or am I missing something?

I’m having trouble getting the flat picking to sound right on measures 5-9, do I just need to keep practicing it over and over until it flows or what advice can you give me

What key is this song in and what scale would I use to come up with some fill licks?
