Earl Scruggs was a well known 5 string banjo picker.  Not sure he ever played a guitar and not sure Devin even owns one.

From what I have read Earl really learned how to play guitar from watching Mother Maybelle Carter. She used a thumb pick to play the melody notes on the bass strings and rhythmic fills on the treble strings. Of course, since he played the 5 string banjo using a thumb pick I am sure it was an easy transition. Here's a clip from the early days of Earl.
