Well, I got my strings but I won't have time to put them on until this weekend. Or maybe Friday. 😐
I got mine yesterday. I’m gonna put them on when the Waverly Bone Bridge pins get here. No rush because that little A&L Roadhouse is still in new condition. Why buy a cute little guitar like that and never play it ?
I put the strings on my Martin Custom and I do like them. These are keepers and I will continue to buy them. I like these better than the Elixirs I had been buying. Those strings just seemed a bit too bright for my taste.
I agree Sue about that brightness. I’m thinking that’s probably why I don’t like the voice of my Taylor. I put Martin strings on it last month with the Waverly Bone Pins (Thank you CGO) and it does sound slightly less buzzy. I watch a podcast done by Taylor Guitar bosses every Tuesday and some of the guitars I hear them play have almost the same voice. So, I’m hoping it’s the Elixirs. When I go to these Light/Mediums I think I’ll take it to a real Luthier (not do it myself) and see what can be done to help her voice. I’m going to take my little Art & Lutherie Roadhouse in too because I’m not hitting the barre chords like I’d like to. With the seasonal changes and the smoke here I’m thinking my humidity is fluctuating too. Pulled my cases out of the corner and started putting my kids to bed at night.
I put off putting the bone bridge pins in until I got these new strings, and yesterday I discovered that the pins didn't fit my Martin Custom. They were too big. I recall reading somewhere that Martin owners had to be cautious about some of these bone bridge pins, because trying to force them into the bridge could damage or even break the bridge. I didn't try to force them in, and they wouldn't hold the strings so I just set to the side for now.
Hubby has a big Guild they might fit in, or I might try them in the Taylor. They may fit in the D-18, I just haven't tried them yet.
@jrick92 Well, I gotta say they don't exactly make me play a lot better, but they do feel good under the fingers! They may help me play better in the long run. 😀
Yea I’ve heard the same thing about bridge pins on my journey to learn about the bridge plate. Bummer
I installed a set on my Yamaha FGX5 to replace the strings that came from the factory and they sound mighty fine. Louder and a bit deeper tone. Not sure if just becauase of new strings or something special going on.
Either way, They sound great.
@dougiep2010 Nice! Glad you like the strings!!

I just recently changed my strings with elixrs but next time I will give these a shot.
I put the Woodtone strings and the set of bone bridge pins on my Taylor. It has made me like her voice a lot more. This Taylor has been my bane. Just goes to show be careful what you wish for. I’ve wanted a Taylor since the ‘70’s. Finally got brave enough to pull the trigger on one. If I’d gone to a store and played it I wouldn’t have chosen this one. I bought it from a craigslist ad from a little old lady whose husband bought it and subsequently died a couple weeks later. It is the third cheapest one in the Taylor arsenal. Made for a student to learn to play. I fit that bill perfectly. The elixir strings made it sound awful. I put Martin Retro strings on it and it help an itsy bit. I’ve been forcing myself to play it since I put the Woodtone strings and Waverly Pins on it. It is opening up a little more.
My Taylor is going to get a string change pretty soon, too. I had put Elixirs on but it just hasn't sounded very good since. Also want to see if the bone bridge pins will fit on the Taylor since the Martin Custom D wouldn't take them without a fight. It's a shame, because the Custom came with really cheesy plastic bridge pins. Admittedly, this Martin is one from their inexpensive line of guitars (nowhere close to a D-18 or a D-28, etc), but I couldn't believe the cheap bridge pins, LOL.
I told Andy Powers, in a very polite way, what I felt about the cheap ass bridge pins on my Taylor. I watch Taylor’s weekly YouTube show and him and Bob Taylor are always there. It’s a small group of about 30 at the most. Tuesday night at 6 Pacific time. I love it. Bummer is now. Work until 7 so I try to watch while still on calls and keep the volume down. I still watch the Tom Strahle lessons on M,W,F at 9 am. There’s usually another 20-30 in that one too. I put the Bone Pins and Martin Retro Strings on mine last month. They fit fine. It has helped the sound. Much better than the Elixirs. Yesterday, I put a set of the Woodtone’s on it and I’m pretty pleased with how the thicker strings made her sound better.
Good on you for telling him how you felt about the cheap ass bridge pins. 😀
Yep, I'm going to put the Woodtones on the Taylor, too. Still have another set from my first order and I was going to replace the strings on my Recording King, but I think the Taylor needs 'em more.
