Elizabeth Cotton figured out her own style when she was a little girl. She wrote the song "Freight Train, Freight Train" when she was about 11 or 12. She learned to play by sneaking in and borrowing her big brother's guitar.
Apparently this is where the saying (Cotton Pickers) come from.
