Just curious how much time you all spend practicing. I shoot for an hour a day, and some days I do more or less than that but I try to do something every day even if it's just scales. Progress is coming pretty slowly for me though. Gets frustrating sometimes.
I'm the same, I try at least 1 to 1.5 hours per day. I'll get up early to try to get 20-30 min in before I leave for work also. Then hit it again in the evening for an hour or so. Since we started the quarantine I have had more time on my hand since I am on a schedule where I work from home every other week. I am trying to devote more time on my week at home to do short practice sessions during the day. Sometimes it seems like my progress is slow also, but it takes time and repetition. I have strictly been working on my rhythm playing for a while now and I am trying to practice fills and licks now along with my rhythm playing. Just stay at it, and it will come....
I've usually been hitting at least an hour a day lately. Got a nice backporch which makes guitar practice mandatory. Also, this website keeps me super entertained with potential to learn new stuff every single day! This website made my banjo collect dust though, I've been on a guitar tear. I love playing the songs that I've memorized from here over and over again, the trick is making myself learn and memorize new stuff.
I've come to believe that for me at least, less is more. Which is to say that many short sessions are far more conducive to muscle memory development than longer sessions. I work from home and have many 5 minute breaks and have found these lengths of time excellent for scales/licks. So 30 minutes split into 6 x 5 minute sessions is a really useful way of learning new things quickly. And probably more useful than 45 - 60 minutes in one go.
Of course, nothing beats a good session when you can really unwind and get into it, and most people won't have a schedule like mine, but i do recommend short sessions when you have something specific to focus on like a lick or scale. It takes the monotony out of it too!
@dom Short sessions are a good idea. Think I'll try it and see if that helps me retain what I've been learning.
Usually try and shoot for 1hr per day as well, and totally agree on spacing out sessions! It's amazing how putting the guitar down for a while after a practice session can really make everything sink into your fingers.
I play 2 X 30 minutes a day at least.
15 minutes scales.
30 minutes songs.
15 minutes to listen Devin’s lesson.
I wish I had the discipline to do 2x 30 minutes a day. I read the book, "The Practice of Practice" by Jonathan Harnum, and it was pretty good. I think I need to read it again though. 😀 I'll do an hour a day most days, but I'd probably do better if I broke it into shorter sessions.
I saw an interview where Joe Diffie's dad told him if he was going to make it he needed to do something every day towards his goal. He said some nights he would be laying in bed and remember he didn't do anything that day so he would go grab his guitar and play for 10 minutes.
I try to do the same. Some days i am on fire and could play all day others i just cant get in my groove. On the days i cant get in my groove I usually only play for 10 - 15 minutes
Lately I have been practicing until my fingers can’t take it anymore. They have built up some pretty good calluses at this point.
I try for an hour of practice a day where I learn a scale, a technique... then i try to just play something maybe a song a already know, but just relax have fun and play.
I am new to country bluegrass, so everything is new and does not come natural to me. I am hopeful over time that I pick up the logic, the muscle memory where I capture the lessons.
I am enjoying the lessons
I have a pretty bad memory so I usually watch a lesson 2 - 3 times
before I pick up my guitar and play along. I like making small goals even if its just
mastering part of a lesson to where I can play it extremely fast and smooth. It’s little victories
like that that make playing both fun and challenging. Personally the exciting thing I’ve found about playing is
the challenge is never ending. Some days I’ll play for hours others I’ll just pick it up for like 20-30 minutes.
My goal is to both continuously improve my skills and have fun with it.
@rg I have to go back and do lessons multiple times too. I usually start on the lesson from the previous day and then decide if it’s time to move on.
@rg Totaly agree!
