I can figure out the exact note name of each note in a lick, but I don’t think about it on the spot when I’m playing licks. When I’m playing a solo, I’m always familiar with the rhythm chord progression that I’m soloing over, and I’m aware of the root notes of each chord in the progression so I can follow the root notes in my solo to make it sound like it belongs to the progression.
