A Lesson on building flat picking speed would be a great help Devin.
I've been told not to even work on speed but only on accuracy and let the speed happen on it's own. With that being said, I would sure like to see it happen a little faster.
I was just working on Cold Frosty morning and heard myself playing very soft and slow. I started thinking how much louder I play the same arpeggios in Jerusalem Ridge and Banks of the Ohio. In my head I heard, “build it and they will come.” (Field of Dreams)
Yep, the "get it accurate no matter how slow you have to go is" the usual advice. The banjo teacher of course says the same thing. He says, you may be able to play parts of this fast and then get tripped up on the next part. Try not to do that. However slow you need to go to make smooth transitions - do that. When you can play it perfectly really slow, THEN try to play it faster, but not before then. Also, always play with a metronome when you are starting out.
I'm guilty of this. I've always hated the metronome, but I'm making a real effort to practice it with the banjo. And with guitar lessons I'll blaze through the parts I can play well and get tripped up every time on the more difficult parts. I'm learning. LOL
I truly believe in the slow is smooth and smooth is fast but I also always want to ask them if that's the way they learned,,,,I can just imagine them whaling away when they were young. lol
Slow and Smooth, At 56 years young time is running out for the slow method 🤣 🤣
I’ve been working on clean finger placement. I noticed my callous on my ring finger isn’t on the pad. I’ve been watching my placement for a couple of days to stop that bad habit.
@jerseychicadee My ring finger is the weakest usually, Always buzzing.
@jerseychicadee Yes i see the callous on your ring finger is definitely of center, Has me checking now 😀
Yes, those callouses are off center, at least from what I can see in the photo. Mine are surprisingly spot on and thick. Can't feel a thing with them.
My pinky finger is the weakest, for sure.
