I gotta be honest and say I didn't really listen to much of John Prine when I was younger, but since he died I've listened to a lot of his songs and he really was a great songwriter. I had to look this song up on YouTube and it was a good one. Sorry I can't help you as far as how to play it though.

We play this tune at our jam circle. I use a ddududu pattern and it works pretty well at a good tempo. I watch the John Prine Nancy Griffith videos too. He of course does it differently but that pattern works for me. It's a terrific song, he was a master at capturing the essence of life's emotions in simple words.
