Hi All, Hope you're having a good Monday.
I've got a question regarding the songs that you would consistently hear in a Bluegrass jam session. What traditional or standard songs would you hear getting together with some people just sitting around and informally jamming together?Â
I was watching some YouTube videos of informal jams that took place in the campground of a Pickin' in the Pines 3-day event, and they were playing songs I'd never heard before! Some of this country music is new to me, but there's a LOT of music I don't remember ever hearing in my life, which is kind of weird. For instance, Whiskey Before Breakfast was a new one to me, but I understand it's a fairly old song.Â
If you can, give me a list of songs you've heard done in a jam that everyone knew how to play and they were familiar with. Thanks!
You may not need to know the exact song. If you know the key or the chord progression you could probably join in and improvise? It seems like it would be hard to learn that many songs.
@rinny51Â That's interesting. I guess you could just keep up with the rhythm strumming and even a solo, but you couldn't sing it!
Does anyone do jam sessions? Just curious.Â
@shysue sometimes during the holidays we play at our house but I like country, one of my uncles plays folk, sometimes we meet in the middle with something like Johnny Cash or some classic rock lol
@rinny51Â Oh, that would be fun! We don't do that in my family, but I wish we would.
Here a just a few played a lot in my neck of the woods:
Old Joe Clark
Nine Pound Hammer
June Apple
Angel Band
Whiskey For Breakfast
Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow Tree
Bill Cheatum
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
Billy In The Lowground
Soldier's Joy
Â
@trike Thank you, John. That's a great list and I know one song (Will the Circle be Unbroken). I better get to work learning the other ones!
I love Soldiers Joy. I love all the story tellers!Â
Is Stay All Night, Stay a Little Longer one of those songs that they'd do at a Jam Session? Just curious.
