Any banjo players in here? I picked up a cheap banjo for $20 at an estate sale. Just need to get some new strings. It also came with this Earl Skruggs book.

What a great find! I used to go to estate sales all the time and love finding stuff like this. Usually musical instruments get snapped up quickly at those sales though.

I don't play banjo but I overheard my husband tell someone (after I bought the mandolin) that he saw a banjo in our future. LOL I'm busy enough with guitar and mandolin don't think we're getting one any time soon. Well, unless I can find one for $20. 😀

@shysue it’s a little rough, but I have waisted $20 on less before 🤣

Hey, that's cool. I've never picked one up but it looks like fun!

I think a fiddle would be a lot of fun, but I just don't have the time.

It is a cheap banjo but the entertainment value is worth $20 alone to me.

We have a used bookstore chain here called Bookman's. They started dealing in used instruments a couple of years back and I've been sorely tempted to get a banjo or a fiddle. So far I've resisted because the guitar is challenging enough.

A few months back I decided I had to have a mandolin but it's a lot more challenging than I thought it might be. It's tuned like a violin (GDAE) and it's totally different than a guitar. For one thing the fret board is a lot narrower than the guitar and the fingers get squeezed together more.

But maybe a banjo would be easier. I don't know a whole lot about them. But if I run across a $20 banjo I'm buying it. 😛

@shysue I have been waiting for the strings to get delivered. In the meantime I have been practicing some basic banjo rolls on the guitar and looking at the chord fingering. It is tuned to an open G tuning so it seems like I could pretty much hit the ground running by playing some bar chords. And then figure out the more advanced stuff.

I love to watch Steve Martin play the banjo. It’s just cool to see ‘a wild and crazy guy’ play so freakin’ good!! Myself,  I’m pretty much scared to pick one up.  I picked one up ONE time, at a festival. It was so heavy I put it right back down.  Call me chicken. Chicken 🐓 🐔 🍗 🐓 🐔

Hey Eric, I learned 5 sting banjo back in the early 70s and that Earl Scruggs music book was the holy grail back then.  Learned all his songs on a cheap banjo and then as I got better I upgraded.

@jerseychicadee

I enjoyed watching  Steve Martin too. He was pretty good from what I remember.
