Does anyone use the Lick Library?
I’ve been using it a lot lately.
@jerseychicadee Its memorising the bleeding things that gets me 😆 😆
@wjssavhotmail-co-uk Right John. Are they worthwhile memorizing? Maybe if you could use them as fillers for improvisational purposes, but I'm not at that skill level yet. Some pieces at CGO have endings that just leave you hanging and some end with a simple chord. Sometimes Devin gives alternate endings that you can tack on at the end. Kind or a bonus ending. I'm not sure if the Lick Library licks would work as endings though. What I did find useful though were two lessons on endings. "How to End a B.G. Song With Style" and "The Ultimate B.G. Ending."
always the memory... and hours, months, years of rehearsal before naturally stringing together all these licks, sometimes it's discouraging
@thib I get discouraged as well but some how i keep coming back for more 😀
@jambongris I must check in on the endings lesson thanks for the advice.
memorization is one of the things that impressed me the most during the Billy Strings concert in November. In Luxembourg City he played 34 pieces. A true marathon of Bluegrass classics. I liked it but I would have preferred a few long and improvised pieces which he has the secret of.... I look at the setlists of his tour, he must have more than 60 which he rotates according to the concerts. On the guitar I think he no longer thinks, but knowing the words to so many songs I can't believe it!
@thib The human brain is an amazing machine. Concert pianists are the ones who impress me the most with their ability to memorize pages and pages of music. Some people are fortunate to have photographic memories. I think memorization is good for the brain in the same way exercise is good for the muscles and heart.
@wjssavhotmail-co-uk Yes, that's the solution!
@lc There's just so much to learn on this website that I find it difficult to prioritize. The Lick Library wasn't even on my radar, but maybe it should be. These are cool little miniatures to learn and memorize, but what can I do with them other than impress people, several bars at a time?
@jambongris If you follow, Building powerful bluegrass solos Michael Devin will show you how to put the licks together.
@wjssavhotmail-co-uk Aha. Now I see. Thank you John for putting me in the picture. The course you mention looks like a great future project and it would be beneficial to learn for a situation with multiple guitars taking turns soloing and providing rhythm backing as well.
