“Angeline the Baker“, also known as “Angelina Baker”, is an old traditional song that was written by Stephen Foster and published in 1850. Foster was one of the first commercial pop composers and he wrote “Angelina Baker” for a group called Christy Minstrels. Since 1850, this song has been recorded by several artists and it’s become a standard for country and bluegrass jams. In this guitar lesson, you’ll learn two flatpicking breaks for “Angeline the Baker” along with tips for playing the rhythm guitar part.

You can actually download and save the tablature for the main lessons…button right below the video..and for the newer lessons I’ve been adding the Guitar Pro 7 file for all the folks out there that use Guitar Pro tab software. Nice, glad you like the melody! Had a lot of fun picking on this one myself. Honestly not a big singer either but anything with a good guitar melody works for me. I’m recording part of a “Beaumont Rag” lesson tomorrow. Had several requests for it so figured it would be a great song for the site. Probably posting round one of the melody first (maybe Friday) and then the second break, rhythm lesson, and jam track early next week. Pretty happy with the first break though!
take your time Devin ..I know even the slow Beaumont rag intermediate is more than a enough for me ,, I been trying in between these lessons some free sample versions on youtube but it is really all going to take me time .. this is a great lesson for me.. I finally got it rolling almost good as you or close enough…been taking breaks between but it is finally sticking !
That’s awesome, great you got this one down…perfect song to build up clean picking for sure. I like speeding it up and playing it fast sometimes, but really like this pace here..feels good to get all the notes clean and a lot of nice overtones. Yep, got a bit behind over here…adopted a new puppy to keep my dog company during the day. Phew she’s been a lot of work so far..pushed the Beaumont Rag lesson back a day or so, but it’ll be along the lines of this lesson. Have a good weekend!
RED HAIRED BOY and ANGELINE THE BAKER, are full of 1/8, 1/16, slides and pull offs, just the type of songs I can handle as a beginner cross picker. Not so fast that I can’t play it and still enjoy the tune. I don’t know the Bluegrass song library so I can’t request anything in particular, but if you can come up with similar Bluegrass songs I know it would help me tremendously in my journey to play Bluegrass.

Devin trying to make sense of the picking pattern and wondering how critical it is to follow your down – up selection. I can’t seem to find an order to it? Random or pure personal choice?
There’s a method to it… I usually always play down picks on the down beats and up picks on the up beats so you can keep the down up down up pattern going over each measure. One measure counting eighth notes would be 1&2&3&4&…the down beats happen when you count the number and the up beats happen when you say “and”. The picking over that measure if you picked every eighth note would be down up down up down up down up. What is The strum pattern on your back up?
When I first tried this it was beyond my skills but after practicing Wheel Hoss in the style of David Grier, I came back to it and found the building block to bye start learning one of my fav.s. CGO brilliant in providing the steps to confidence !
Love this song and what a great arrangement. Struggling with the double hammer ons and the reaches in the higher register but I keep plugging away.
