Right hand Pinky fixed, floating, or ???
I've seen Devin using his pinky as an anchor on the pick guard. I've also seen many videos in which his picking hand is not in contact with the guitar at all while he picks the strings. I may or may not have seen him resting his picking hand on or near the bridge (which is the technique favoured by Molly Tuttle). I just watched on YT the 2024 National Flatpicking Guitar Championship where the winner used the pinky anchored on the pick guard technique. I have tried both the Pinky fixed and the Molly Tuttle picking hand resting on the bridge techniques without any success at all so it looks like I'm stuck with the "floating" technique where my picking hand does not come in contact at all with the guitar. If someone would show me how to accomplish either of the other two, I'd be happy to learn, but I can't seem to get the hang of either one at this point. How about you John? Which one do you favour?
@jambongris Hi Michael, I have always anchored my pinky but of late i have been trying a floating right hand.
I have been watching Lessons with Marcel, he advocates for a floating right hand (no part of your pick hand touching at all).
I think i'll try it a few weeks to see how it goes. 😀
@wjssavhotmail-co-uk Lessons with Marcel videos are very informative and I need to watch more of them. There was one that I'd like find again because he was talking about how to make your playing less "staccato" and more "legato". I hope your right hand becomes accustomed to the floating technique and you find it to your liking, John.
Most of the times my pinky touch the pickguard ... sometimes I'm surprising myself seeing it is floating, ... it works for a while, but I feel the need to fix it again, otherwhise it will go bad
