Mixolydian Scale Charts for Guitar (All Keys)

The Mixolydian mode is one of the most useful sounds in country and bluegrass lead guitar. It’s basically a major scale with a flat 7—that one note change is what gives you that “bluegrass modal major” sound you hear in so many jam tunes. (Example: G Mixolydian uses F natural, not F#.)

Below you’ll find Mixolydian scale charts for guitar in every key. Each diagram shows the scale tones across the neck, with the root notes marked so you can quickly lock onto the key center.

How do I know when a song is in Mixolydian? (Bluegrass-friendly explanation in the key of G)

A fast way to hear Mixolydian is: it sounds like G major, but the song keeps using F natural (instead of F#). In bluegrass circles, you’ll often hear players call these “G & F songs”—because the harmony (or melody) leans on that flat-7 chord or flat-7 note.

1) Look for the “giveaway” note: F natural (♭7)

In G major, the 7th scale degree is F#. In G Mixolydian, the 7th is F natural. So if the melody (or your ear) keeps pulling toward F instead of F#, you’re probably in Mixolydian.

2) Check the chords: do you see an F major chord in a “G song”?

A super common Mixolydian sound is the presence of the ♭VII chord. In G, that’s F major. So if the band is clearly centered around G but keeps hitting F major, that’s a strong Mixolydian clue.

Common G Mixolydian-style progressions:

  • G – F – G (I – ♭VII – I)
  • G – F – C – G (I – ♭VII – IV – I)
  • G – C – F – G (I – IV – ♭VII – I)

3) Confirm the “home base” is still G

This is important: the song can use an F chord and still feel like G is home. If the tune resolves to G and the band treats G like the center—yet you keep hearing that F natural flavor—you’ve got a great candidate for G Mixolydian.

4) What to solo with (simple bluegrass approach)

Start with G Mixolydian (G A B C D E F). The safest “bluegrass” targets are:

  • Chord tones on G: G, B, D
  • Chord tones on C (if it’s in the song): C, E, G
  • Chord tones on F: F, A, C (this is where the Mixolydian flavor really pops)

Tip: when the band hits the F chord, try landing on A (3rd of F) or F (root). That instantly sounds “right” in a Mixolydian tune.

FAQ: Mixolydian for Bluegrass & Country Guitar

Is Mixolydian just a major scale?

It’s extremely close. Mixolydian is a major scale with a flat 7 (♭7). That one note change is why it sounds more “rootsy” and modal.

What chords fit Mixolydian?

A common giveaway is the ♭VII major chord (like F major in the key of G).

What’s the quickest way to hear G Mixolydian?

Listen for F natural in the melody or an F major chord while the tune still resolves to G.
